A History of Worship in the Parish

CLERGY OF WARMINGTON

The Rector was appointed to the benefice of the parish and received the tithes of the parishioners. He was responsible for the church services and the spiritual welfare of his parishioners and for maintaining the chancel of the parish church. At the Reformation, when monastic land was confiscated by the crown, the right of appointment (patronage) of Warmington parish was purchased from the king by the lord of the manor.

In the early 17th century the patronage was purchased by the rector himself – Richard Wotton was the first priest to be both rector and patron. The patronage was passed down through Richard Wotton’s descendants for several generations. William Harrison sold the patronage to the Hulme Trustees in the mid 19th century. Their right of appointment continued until the 1970s when it passed to the Bishop of Coventry.

Curates were appointed by the Rectors to carry out their duties when they themselves were unable to do so, either through age or infirmity or because they were pluralists (having more than one parish or role within the Church of England) .

METHODISM: THE LOCAL PICTURE

Development of Methodism

In 1729 a group of 15 university men started meeting in Oxford to examine how a faithful life should be led. From these meetings they drew up a Rule of Life which stated they should be diligent in:

  1. studying the scriptures
  2. caring for the poor, sick and prisoners
  3. observing Wednesday as well as Friday as a day of abstinence
  4. communicating (taking communion) at the altar as frequently as they could find opportunity.

The group was called the Holy Club or Methodists….. More
