Warmington Members of the Knowle Guild
Extracts from the Guild of Knowle
Knowle was a hamlet in the extensive parish of Hampton-in-Arden. In 1397, Walter Cook, a canon of Lincoln, obtained a papal bull enabling him to build a chapel with baptismal and burial rights in Knowle. A few years later Walter established a chantry with a chaplain at Knowle. In 1413 he founded, with others, a gild or fraternity in connection with the church consisting of a master with brethren and sisters to be called the gild of St Anne of Knowle. Under Walter’s influence Knowle went on to become a collegiate church with a complement of up to ten chantry priests.
The old register of the Guild survives, showing the great popularity of the institution throughout Warwickshire and beyond. For an annual subscription, the priests of the guild prayed for the health of the souls of the brethren and sisters.
